Polys is the son of Cypriot shipping magnate Loucas Haji-Ioannou, who at one point owned the largest private tanker fleet in the world.
Most of his wealth derives from a large stake in easyJet, the discount airline founded by his younger brother, Stelios.
Polys continues the family's shipping legacy with his own 18-tanker fleet.
He has also invested heavily in both commercial and residential real estate, particularly in Cyprus, Greece and Norway.

The brother of EasyJet founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou, Polys rose to billionaire rankings this year on the back of EasyJet's rising shares.
He still holds an 11% share in the budget airline, even though he, his brother Stelios and their sister Clelia were obliged to sell 200,000 shares each. What's interesting is that the stock's value increased 73% from 2013 to 2014 despite a conflict between Stelios and management executives regarding the acquisition of a new aircraft.
To get a clearer picture of EasyJet, it's based at London Luton Airport and is regarded as the UK's largest airline by number of passengers carried. The airline operates both on national and international level on over 600 routes in 32 countries. The above aside, Polys Haji-Ioannou is also some kind of a shipping magnate, managing oil transport group Polyer Tankers while serving as CEO and Chairman of publicly-traded Safe Bulkers, almost half of which he owns.
